Devotionals For Week Of June 17-21, 2013

	Monday June 17, 2013

	Companionship

Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits.”
(I Corinthians 15:33 NKJV)

We can find encouragement through the companionship of God's
people.

Close friends, Christian companions, can be mighty tools in God's
hands to bring us encouragement.

Marine researchers off the coast of Corsica reported sighting a
dolphin that was behaving strangely. The dolphin was not swimming. It
was just watching their boat draw nearer and nearer.

They decided that the dolphin was sick, so they netted it and
examined it. The dolphin did not resist and showed no fear. The
examination revealed no sign of any wound or illness. Yet, an hour
later the animal was dead!

The marine researchers concluded that — for some unknown reason
— the dolphin must have been ostracized by other dolphins. When
they are excluded in this way, they become desperate, attach
themselves to anyone or anything and sometimes will themselves to die.

Like the dolphin, we need fellowship. We need companionship. We need
each other. But hear me carefully — we need the companionship
and friendship of other believers.

There's an old Latin saying that goes, "If you always live with
those who are lame, you will begin to limp."

The Bible puts it this way in 1 Corinthians 15:33: Do not be
deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”

I pray you have a blessed day today.

	He Is Our Life

Give unto the Lord, O ye mighty, give unto the Lord glory and
strength. Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name; worship the
Lord in the beauty of holiness. (Psalm 29:1-2NKJV)

Years ago, at a retreat for Deacons and their wives, we were talking
about serving the Lord. One of my sessions stressed putting Jesus
first in your life. After I finished speaking, we had a time for group
discussion.

One of the precious ladies there shared something I'll never
forget. She said, "I used to put Jesus first in my life, but then I
discovered that wasn't enough." Her words intrigued me and
everyone else. I asked her to elaborate. She said, "When I put Jesus
first in my life, I can attend to Him and then move on to the things
that are second and third and fourth and fifth in my life. But when I
make Him the center of my life, everything I do connects to Him."

For us to give God the glory due His name means we must understand
that Jesus is not just part of our lives. He's not just an
important part of our lives. He's not even just the most important
part of our lives.

To give God glory means to understand that He is our life. All that
we do…all we think…all we have…all that we
are…flow from Him.

I pray you have a blessed day today.

	Dangerous Christianity

But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not fear
therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. (Matthew 10:30-31
NKJV)

Jack had a diamond that was very valuable to him.

When Jack's parents died, he took the diamond that his dad had
given his mother in an engagement ring.

The diamond is rather small. It's not at all perfect. Many people
wouldn't want the diamond at all. But Jack knew that his dad had
earned the money for the ring by doing hard labor in a stone quarry.
It was precious to him.

Jack had a jeweler take the diamond from his mother's engagement
ring and put it in a man's ring. He wore that ring, with his
mother's diamond, for nearly 20 years.

One night, after attending a conference in a city far from home, Jack
went for a walk and was held up at gunpoint by two robbers.

The crooks asked Jack for his money and he gave it to them, money
clip and all. They asked for his watch, which had been an expensive
gift from his older brother. Jack handed it over.

Finally, they asked for his ring. Jack said, "You'll have to come
and get it."

It wasn’t the monetary value of the ring, but the significance
of it that motivated him to refuse.

	Amazingly, they didn't shoot him.

After hearing the story, the investigating officer told Jack —
and I quote — "You're an idiot."

He said, "The next time someone threatens you with a gun, give them
everything they want."

That story caused me to wonder… Is there anything I value more
than my own life?

	It’s a thought worth pondering.

I pray you have a blessed day today.

	He Is Our Strength

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who
loved us. (Romans 8:37 NKJV)

A man from the Midwest was driving through Colorado. He was traveling
uphill along a major interstate, when he overtook a freight train
going in the same direction at a slower speed. The train was being
pushed uphill by two locomotives that sounded as if they were
straining at full power.

The man, being a flatlander, was puzzled. Is this how trains move in
mountainous terrain, he wondered.

A few minutes later, the man gradually came alongside the front of
the nearly mile-long string of cars. There he found five more
locomotives pulling the train. Seven engines in all!

There's a lesson in that train: When you are pushing a load
uphill with all the strength you have and feel like your energy level
is depleted, God wants you to know that He is in the lead pulling with
power far greater than yours.

I pray you have a blessed day today.

	Middle Of A Storm

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love
God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28
NKJV)

At a Christian retreat, Terri was sitting at the dinner table with
her 13 year old daughter and several other women. Other than her
daughter, she knew none of the ladies at the table.

When her daughter left the table, Terri began to weep. Why? She began
to tell her story.

Three children. Her oldest - thirteen. Then her middle child who had
multiple sclerosis. And her baby, who had numerous birth defects.

She was taking care of all of them while her husband had been on a
tour of duty in the military. When her husband came home, he seemed
distant.

Terri noticed a lump on the back of her neck and went to the doctor
for a biopsy. She knew it was bad news when they called her to come to
the office to get her test results.

While she was waiting in the doctor's office a woman walked up to
her and said "I've been having an affair with your husband." That
news, then, the doctor told her she has Stage 4 cancer.

When she told her husband, he left immediately and has had no contact
with her or the children since.

But that was not why Terri was weeping at the table.

She had been a counselor for teenaged girls at her church. Some
people were telling her, "You can't do this anymore, with all
that's going on." Heartbroken, the ladies at the table sweetly
reminded her, "God will use the tragedy you're going through to
help you minister to others.”

Some of the greatest times of ministry are when we are in the middle
of a storm. God can even use the storms of our lives for good.

Are you allowing God to use your storm for His glory?

I pray you have a blessed day today.
